2020: Our Least Favorite Films

As much as 2020 was horrible in just about everything else, it didn't produce as many bad films as previous years. There were still bad films, but not enough for me to fill a full Top Ten list. Therefore, I have only done a Top Five list this year.

5. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (Paramount)

Sponge on the Run, the third Spongbob Squarepants film is a travesty. This series used to be alive with imagination and wonder, but now it has been reduced to being an advertisement for a series that the now-deceased creator didn't even want. Paramount and Nickelodeon should be ashamed of themselves for making this thing. The film isn't funny, the animation style is distracting, and it leaves with too many unanswered questions. I really hated this film while watching it and I am reliving that hatred as I write this. Skip this garbage and just watch the original show. 

4. The Hunt (Universal) 

I can appreciate satire as much as the next person, but the satire in The Hunt is so in your face that it stops being funny and becomes very tired. The film starts out well enough but falls into saying things that are political without really saying anything. Republicans do this, democrats say this. Hahahahahaha. Not even the fight scene at the end of the film can save this film from itself. I do like the lead, Betty Gilpin. She is pretty badass throughout the entire film and we end up finishing the film because of her. Besides her, the rest of the film fails on just about every level.

3. Super Intelligence (Warner Brothers) 

Super Intelligence would have been in the number one spot had it not been for the two films that are worse than it. This is a terribly bad film. None of the jokes land, we care nothing for these characters, and the film has one of the worse plot structures I have seen in a long while. This film wants to get to its "star" so fast that it forgoes basic plot structure. That "star" is James Corden and, as always, he is the worse. Thankfully, we don't have to see him, but we do have to suffer through his "jokes". Super Intelligence is the worst kind of comedy: a jokeless one.

2. The New Mutants (20th Century Studios) 

The New Mutants sat on the shelf for three years as Fox, then Disney, tried to figure out what to with it. They finally released it into theaters as they reopened in the US after the country went into lockdown as COVID-19 ravaged the nation. To say that The New Mutants is a terrible film is an understatement. This is a film that wants us to spend time with the stockiest of stock characters while nothing happens. That's right. For a big portion of the film, nothing happens. Things happen at the end, but by that time, we just don't care. 

1. Scoob! (Warner Brothers) 

I grew up on Scooby-Doo. The show was always on tv along with the Adam West Batman. I was actually looking forward to SCOOB! despite everything that said that I should run away from it. I should have listened. SCOOB! is a film, like Spong on the Run, that was made for the sole purpose of making other things that no one asked for. In this case, Warner Brothers wanted an entire cinematic universe of all the Hanna Barbara characters, so they jam-packed SCOOB! with said characters. The problem lies in the fact that none of these characters feel like the characters we know and love and all of them are the butt of a lot of jokes that fans hated. To top it off, the brothers' Warner kicked out the original voice cast in favor of name actors resulting in one of the worst portrayals of Shaggy I have ever heard. SCOOB! is nothing but a lazy cash grab and is the worst film of 2020.
