What's It About?

Set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles of 2057, Hawkins Coselow, a crippled soldier, along with his ex-lover, Chandra Kerkorian, share vivid psychosexual dreams. Dr. Alexis Zalazny is working on a cybernetic program that will help Coselow walk again. The program sort of works, but everything goes deadly wrong when Coselow becomes a killing machine that can interface with any computer. He ends up killing several people belonging to a resistance movement.

The rebels are led by Omegas, cybernetically altered humans, battled government forces in the crime-ridden streets. In time, the Omegas reprogrammed themselves and carried out their own deadly agenda. In the end, the Omegas were destroyed, except one - implanted in a child, Chandra Kerkorian. Now grown, she is ready to lead the rebellion again.

Video/Audio

Oof, the DNR machine must have been running on high during the making of this film's video transfer. It is all over the place, giving us a weird-looking picture that is far too clean for the film it is. Just about every face looks waxy and unreal. Everything is so smooth. It looks terrible. The picture also has this piss color to it that I highly doubt was the filmmaker's original intent. This was made in the early 90s, piss color was not something that was popular at the time. This thing should have a cold, steel look to it while also having a golden glow to the daytime scenes. This golden glow has been turned into piss brown. It looks like crap and should feel like crap. The cold steel look has been turned into a greenish, ugly mess.

The lossy tracks are fine. They get the job done.

Extras/Packaging

Trailer Zu:

Motel Hell (2m 40s, HD, 1.85:1)
Orion 3000 (3m 14s, HD, 1.78:1) in German with no subtitles
Castle Freak (2m 14s, HD, 1.85:1)

Blidergalerie (2m 35s) Auroplays with music.

You know, I was surprised that there was a photo gallery. I did not expect to see any special features outside of the film's trailer (which isn't even on here) but we did get some trailers for other films this company has released.

The photo used for the cover of the German blu-ray is ugly, being a hodgepodge of photos from the film. It is not at all attractive and looks pretty lazy. The disc art is fine.

The disc is REGION FREE

Overall

PROTOTYPE is not a good film. It contains a lot of scenes with people looking intently at computer screens while typing furiously. The film never really has anything to say or to do and it all becomes very boring, really fast. It is a good one-time watch, I guess if you have nothing better to do and this blu-ray is the only blu-ray you own.

The blu-ray is a downright shame. Why does everyone have a problem with film grain? Doesn't make any sense to me but here we are. The transfer here is a terrible DNR mess with some shitty coloring thrown in for good measure. The fact that there are any good features on this disc allows me to tell you to tell this blu-ray to go fuck itself. This thing is terrible and you should skip it at all costs. It is a shame that this is probably the only blu-ray release this film will ever have.
